Goosen honoured on SA golf series - Vodacom Origins
JOHANNESBURG (3 May 2012) – Retief Goosen will receive one of the unique accolades in South African golf when his career and contribution to the game is celebrated as the theme of this year’s Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour on the Sunshine Tour.
The double US Open champion will be the focus of the 2012 Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour, a six-tournament series that is the single biggest series on the local professional calendar, bringing together professionals and invited amateurs in a pro-am format on some of South Africa’s most celebrated golf courses.
The series has been dubbed “The Goose Chase”, with the ultimate prize for the winning amateurs from each event being an opportunity to play golf with Goosen in the Final at The Links at the end of the year.
“I’m honoured to be part of the Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour and to be able to connect with my fans in this way. Vodacom has played such a key role in supporting golf over the years, and so many of our young stars have been winners on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing more of our young champions coming through the ranks this year,” Goosen said.
The 2012 Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour, now in its eighth year, tees off with the first tournament at Simola Golf and Country Estate from 9-11 May. The series will also travel to Zebula Country Club in Limpopo, De Zalze in the Western Cape, the Selborne Hotel, Spa and Golf Estate in KwaZulu-Natal, Sishen Golf Club in the Northern Cape, and The Links at Fancourt near George for the Final.
Each event sees two invited amateurs teeing it up with two Sunshine Tour professionals over 36 holes. The top 10 amateurs will qualify for the Final. The final round of every 54-hole tournament is reserved for the professionals, who will compete for a total purse of R570 000.
“We are honoured to have Retief on board with us. He is a professional individual who remains focused, driven and grounded and is in essence what we at Vodacom strive towards,” said Romeo Kumalo, Vodacom’s Chief Commercial Officer.
This year’s series will once again feature a strong charity element. The Birdies for Kiddies campaign sees the sponsor match every birdie or eagle made in each tournament with a cash equivalent that is donated at the end of the series to various children’s charities. Last year the series raised over R2 million for charity.
